5 Steps to get up your company website

Getting your website up could seem difficult, but it really isn’t. Here’s what you need and what you can expect to pay. Also, leaking pockets offers a lot of these services more affordable. However, as your web traffic grows your needs for your site will change. But here are the simple and easy steps.

  1. Pick a domain name – go to a site like godaddy and test domain names and when you find one that fits purchase it. If the domain name is taken you can probably purchase it from the person holding the name.
  2. Buy some hosting – This is a service provided by a lot of companies to host your site. Which simply means to display. I’ve used alterhosting for a few years, they have worked out well and offer packages to suit anyone’s needs. I suggest you grab the smallest and cheapest site to charge. This step can be bypassed though like if you set up a facebook fan page for your company. You could hand out the cards that say, “my_company_name.com” and have it redirected to facebook. Until you are ready for the next step.
  3. Install wordpress. Most sites use a content management solution. Which just means a way of managing the pages. You divide pages into bite size nuggets with a title, image, body. The rest is done for you.
  4. Pick a template – This is where your site takes on life. There are over 10K templates in existence currently. This number grows so often that it’s probably doubled since you’ve started reading this article. Which for you means look through the forest of templates and find one that meets your business criteria. You may even want to get the full version of the template which will probably cost 100 bucks or so. I’ve purchased the full version of this template simply because it would take me more time to build myself than to just purchase it, time is money.
  5. Install plugins – Plugins are where you get a lot of your functionality. For instance there’s a plugin to track what people are doing when they make it to your site, and where they are coming from to make it to your site. Both of which are valuable information as you develop your site to meet users’ needs.
